Board of Education approves SOGI policy
The Abbotsford Board of Education passed an updated policy to address SOGI (sexual orientation and gender identity). This comes after the fall announcement by the Minister of Education that all school boards in the province include sexual orientation and gender identity and expression in anti-bullying policies.
"Ensuring the safety and inclusion of LGBTQ students and staff is a priority in our District,” stated Shirley Wilson, Chair of the Abbotsford Board of Education. “We know that having an appropriate policy and a new administrative procedure is only a first step, but it is an important one. We will continue to focus on working together towards a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for all - our students, our staff and their families.”
The Board recognizes that revising its existing policy is only a small step of the ongoing conversation. The policy was reviewed by the District’s Policy Committee and the final draft was presented at the public meeting held Tuesday, February 21st.
“The development of any administrative procedure requires careful deliberation and communication with various audiences,” noted Kevin Godden, Superintendent of the Abbotsford School District. “The revision to the policy and the creation of the new administrative procedure required us to do some research and consultation with staff. We are grateful that the Ministry afforded us the time to properly complete this process. We are optimistic that this will help our staff create more inclusive environments for our students.”
The revised code of conduct policy and accompanying SOGI administrative procedure will be circulated to all 46 school sites throughout the District and added to the District’s website.
